Pears of Peril and How the Phthalo Hates Me.

Wow. We learned a LOT tonight! We painted our first still life tonight. Ok, when I say "WE", I mean everyone but me. It seems I spent all my time talking and gesticulating and none of it painting. So, I promised to upload my pear that I painted at home. I asked everyone what part of the pear still life made them happy, and I got lots of responses like the freckles, the colors, the Chiaroscuro...ok, so nobody actually said chiaroscuro, but that's what they meant. I'm sure that every one of my students is going to click on that link and read about chiaroscuro. Yep. Every one. Do a Google image search for chiaroscuro and observe the use of strong light and dark composition in all sorts of images. Anyway, I digress....

The part of the image that made me dance a little on the inside was the delicate little stem and the way it reaches out to its shadow. I love that bit. I tried to hold onto that happy little dance while I painted that part. I still love the stem when I look at the painting. Find parts of a composition that make you happy and try to convey that feeling when you make your marks.

A very good job by all tonight. Everyone had a different approach to the pear problem, so we got a lot of really good and different images!

  1. Note to self. Make sure you spell Phthalo correctly!! Bad things happen when you don't.
